A brief Introduction to CARS PRO CUP 2012

The CARS (Championship Auto Racing Series) Pro Cup series begins it’s 16th year of racing with the 2012 season. Over the previous 15 years of providing quality short-track racing, the Pro Cup Series has completed 331 races and fans have witnessed more than 600 different drivers compete at 50 different track throughout the U.S and Canada. It is a true stock car touring series, dedicated to providing a place for up and coming drivers to cut their teeth and for veteran drivers to continue to perfect their craft. With longer races than most local tracks or other touring series provide, as well as having live pit stops during the race, CARS is a fan favorite and a great value for your dollar.

Formerly known as the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series (1997-2008) and the USARacing Pro Cup Series (2009-2010), it was was created following the tragic deaths of 1992 Winston Cup Champion Alan Kulwicki, Dan Duncan, Charlie Campbell and Mark Brooks, son of the late Hooters of America CEO Bob Brooks, in a plane crash on their way to Bristol, Tennessee. The Pro Cup Series began in earnest in current form with the 1997 season and has continued to entertain fans and attract drivers ever since. It’s a place where the drivers still make a difference. The words “aero push” and “downforce” are replaced with “door to door” and “bump and run.” The Pro Cup Series also was the first major race series to implement a Championship Series of races in its schedule to determine the season championship! “The Chase” began here!

It is known for giving longtime short-track drivers a chance to make a living competing across the country in the most competitive touring series in the country. Although veterans still make up a large portion of the fields each week, many younger drivers use CARS as a stepping-stone to the larger touring series. In recent years, the Pro Cup Series has seen many of the current stars in NASCAR work their way up by racing in the Pro Cup Series. Drivers such as Trevor Bayne, Regan Smith, Brian Vickers, Danny O’Quinn Jr, Shane Huffman, Clay Rogers, Scott Wimmer, Benny Gordon, Jeff Agnew, and Joey Logano and many others have raced and won in CARS Pro Cup and have gone on to race in NASCAR and some still continue compete in Pro Cup from time to time. Over the years, the grassroots appeal has attracted a virtual “Who’s Who” list of short-track greats.
